New constellation of Italian satellites christened

Name chosen by students and announced by astronaut Cristoforetti

It will be called "Iris" the new constellation of Italian satellites being built in space. Its purpose will be to observe planet Earth, transmitting increasingly precise data and more detailed images. It is an initiative financed with funds made available by the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), and allocated to space activities conducted by the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

"A symbolic name because Iris was the messenger of the gods just as the satellites will reveal to us the conditions of our planet. And it will be the largest European constellation created for this purpose", explained Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, who is aboard the International Space Station (ISS), grappling with the first experiments, mainly on health, prepared by Italian scientists for the space science mission "Minerva".

"The name was chosen by 1061 students from more than 600 Italian schools. The idea of having children christen the constellation was the result of a competition carried out by the Ministries of Technological Innovation and Digital Innovation together with the Asi Space Agency. Astronauts Luca Parmitano and Roberto Vittori also participated in this initiative. Finally, it is a program in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).
