ITA Airways: deadline for bids today

Anac Authority dismiss sanction proceedings against Msc Group involved in airline privatization

The deadline for parties interested in submitting a binding offer to purchase the majority shares of the national airline ITA Airways expires today at 11:59 pm. As of today, there are two consortia vying to acquire the airline: the US fund Certares in partnership with the airlines Air France and Delta Air Lines; and the Italian-German axis formed by the shipping company Msc and the airline Lufthansa.

The favored bidder, according to numerous rumors, is the latter. The possible success of Msc-Lufthansa is also favored by a recent decision of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (Anac), which dismissed the sanction proceedings against the Aponte family's Mediterranean Shipping Company (Msc) Group, despite the contrary opinion of the Council of State. This was a measure pending since 2017 over an alleged case of Pantouflage (employment of former public officials in private companies) involving the former president (from 2008 to 2015) of the Port of Genoa, Luigi Merlot.

In short, Anac recognized the "good faith" of those involved in the affair. Thus falls the obstacle to the sale of ITA Airways from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (Mef) to the consortium composed of Germany's Lufthansa and the Italo-Swiss group Msc.
