Russia seeks to develop domestic air transport

Rosaviatsia ensures support for airlines on domestic routes

Russia launched a procedure to evaluate programs for the development of domestic air transport. This is the result of a meeting held in recent hours between representatives of major Russian air carriers and the deputy head of Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, Vladimir Poteshkin. Among the issues discussed are: air ticket pricing, multimodal transport, and permits to operate international air connections.

From the Russian agency they let it be known that the airlines have been assured that more subsidies will be given to compensate for increased operating costs due to the war in Ukraine. At the same time, Moscow would like to boost domestic routes to maintain the volume of traffic-passengers at last year's levels.

This is an achievable goal only in terms of domestic air transport, given that 19.8 million passengers traveled to Russia in January-April 2022 (95 percent over 2021). While the closure of airspace to and from abroad due to economic sanctions imposed by Western countries is affecting a large part of the industry.
