ITA Airways: the plan of the air carrier Delta Air Lines

In the talks on privatization, the American carrier aims to reduce fleet and fuel costs

The privatization of the flag carrier ITA Airways tickles the appetites of the US airline Delta Air Lines, which together with Air France and the American investment fund Certares, is conducting exclusive negotiations with the Ministry of Economy and Finance for buy the majority of the airline. Among the concerns that emerged there would be the high costs for maintaining the fleet of Airbus aircraft.

This is what emerges from rumors published by the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica", according to which the management of Delta Air Lines has a plan to reduce consumption in the short term. How? Leveraging an oil refinery in Delaware, purchased 10 years ago, which is now helping the company save millions of dollars in fuel. In the future, by making the plant available to ITA Airways, it could help the Italian airline to reduce the impact of the expensive fuel which to date has cost 155 million euros more in the first eight months of 2022.

Delta Air Lines, therefore, according to rumors, would have made a commitment, with the Mef and with ITA Airways, to supply part of the fuel needed during 2023 at controlled prices. The only condition, or at least concern, is the revaluation of the purchase and rental of aircraft in 2022-2023 which will cost 480 million dollars. Therefore Delta could ask to renegotiate the contracts signed with the European manufacturer Airbus, making available part of the 400 new aircraft that the US airline will purchase in the coming years.
