USA: Army bets on helicopters

Chief of Staff McConville asks to modernize fleets

The Chief of Staff of the Army, General James McConville, reiterated the need to invest in the modernization of military helicopters. The message was exposed these days during a speech at the annual conference of the Army Aviation Association. His message aims to urge the development procedures of new generation assault and reconnaissance aircraft.

Furthermore, the message calls for improving the fleet of rotary-wing combat vehicles, because many of these will remain in service until 2050. In detail, the army has three types of weapon: the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk multi-role helicopter, the Boeing AH-64 Apache, the Boeing CH-47 Chinook transport. To date, the Army has no long-term plan to replace the Apache or Chinook, expecting both to remain in service for several more decades. While in the case of the Black Hawk, this will be replaced by the Bell-Boeing V-280 Valor tiltrotor (plane-helicopter).
