ITA-Lufthansa towards official status

Final signatures are needed before notifying the operation in Brussels

The marriage between the German Lufthansa Group and the air carrier ITA Airways is in the final stages. The agreement, strongly desired by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) was positively received in the international diplomatic context, both in Italy and in Germany. Once the final details of the agreement have been finalised, the official announcement will arrive and the documents to be sent to Brussels will be signed.

ITA Airways is a "testimony to how much the national interests" of Italy and Germany "can also converge on a strategic level", declared the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who in the last few hours met the German chancellor Olaf Scholz at Palazzo Chigi.

The vice-president of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager then stated that "there have not yet been contacts" with ITA and Lufthansa, because the final signatures are needed before notifying the operation in Brussels, which will only then proceed with its "analysis". The latter will be based on the evaluation of the European Antitrust.

The Italian Government explains that the official passage of ITA into the Lufthansa Group "is expected for the end of this year". According to some sector experts, there should be no changes in the next board of directors, because Lufthansa should be able to appoint its members to the ITA board only after the closing of the operation.
