Berlin Airport strengthens security checks

The aim is to reduce the formation of long queues at the gates in the Summer

German airport of Berlin-Brandenburg has upgraded its BER Runway security check system for the Summer peak season. The goal is to reduce to zero the possibility of long queues forming at the gates, slowing down boarding operations and causing delays to air connections. Located in Terminal 1, it can be used within a 20-minute window to automatically scan documents and boarding passes.

The "Ber Runway" system has successfully established itself and is an integral part of what we have to offer at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. We give passengers the freedom to choose exactly how long to stay at the airport and thus reduce travel stress. Likewise, this fast-track mechanism allows us to better control procedures", explained airport operations director, Thomas Hoff Andersson

The mechanism, which is based on time slots that can be booked by passengers up to a week before the flight, was initially introduced in Europe in August 2022 at Berlin-Brandenburg airport. It allows travelers to reduce waiting times and improve the customer experience at the airport. More than 800,000 Ber Runway timeslots have been booked to date.
