Tour de France: helicopters will use SAF

Two operators will employ mixes of 30 to 50% for technical support and TV

The helicopters used to fly the 2023 Tour de France cycling competition will use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). These are Airbus Helicopters single-engine H-125 aircraft used to transport VIPs and the organizers of the sports competition, and twin-engine EC-355s used by France Télévisions. The operator Hélicoptères de France will use 50% mix while the tour operator Aso 30%.

"We use 7 to 9 helicopters for this big competition. Our aircraft are in fact used by two customers: the helicopter service operator Aso and Euromedia, which supplies France Télévisionsle with the images that will be broadcast around the world", explained Jean-Marc Genechesi, director of Hélicoptères de France.

"Reducing the carbon footprint -he added- has been a major concern of the Tour for several years. Just as electric cars were introduced into the convoy following the riders, last year Aso asked us to cover a third of all stages with Saf fuel, which we did".
