ITA-Lufthansa: the match played in Europe

Rome can exploit its negotiating power by appointing EIB president

Four important political matches are being played in Europe. Rome is studying a move that would block the agreement between the German aviation group Lufthansa and the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) on the privatization of the national carrier ITA Airways. This move concerns the appointment of the future president of the European Investment Bank (EIB).

This is what the "Bloomberg" news agency reveals, according to which the Italian Executive could offer its support to a candidate who will stimulate the European Competition Commission to give the green light to the ITA-Lufthansa dossier. But how does Rome intend to make the most of its negotiating power?

First of all, the Meloni Government currently supports the name of Daniele Franco, former Minister of Economy and Finance, as a candidate for the presidency of the EIB. It's a five-way game. However, there are two favourites: the Spanish Nadia Calviño and the Danish Margrethe Vestager, former commissioner for competition (on leave). Rome could give its support to Vestager, gaining credit if she loses the match against Madrid and she will be forced to return to the Competition Commission.
