US-Sweden defense agreement signed

Waiting for NATO to approve the Nordic country's membership of the Atlantic Alliance

The US State Department announced that a cooperation agreement in the defense sector between the United States and Sweden was signed in the last few hours. This agreement is signed at a particular moment: in fact Stockholm is strengthening its military alliances while waiting for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to approve the Nordic country's membership of the Atlantic Alliance.

"Sweden is a strong and capable defense partner that upholds NATO values and will further strengthen the Atlantic Alliance once its membership is completed". At that point, "Sweden will strengthen our collective defense and improve our ability to respond to security challenges in the Euro-Atlantic area", said in a press release the US State Department.

Stockholm's initiative is explained by the fact that at the moment Sweden's membership of the Atlantic Alliance is blocked by the lack of support from two member countries, namely Turkey and Hungary. "I hope that the accession will happen as soon as possible", said the Swedish defense minister, Pal Jonson, who gave no estimate on when Ankara and Budapest will give their support.
