Taiwan: China monitors American planes

Beijing accuses: "P-8A Poseidon aircraft too close to our airspace"

Tensions in the Far East between the United States and China. The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army accused the US Navy of flying a Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft near Beijing's airspace. Accusations returned to sender by Washington. China had stepped up its military activity around Taiwan over the past four years, staging various exercises.

"We have monitored, tracked and maintained alert" on the American aircraft "as it transits through the Taiwan Strait. Our troops are always on high alert and will resolutely defend national sovereignty and security, as well as peace and stability regional", said in a statement Chinese command spokesman Shi Yi.

"The transit of the aircraft through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The US military flies, sails and operates wherever international law allows" replied US Navy in a statement, in reference to the overflight of the Seventh Fleet aircraft, also used for anti-submarine missions.
