Airline Lufthansa versus "Last Generation"

Legal action started against climate activists for blockades of some airports

The German aviation group Lufthansa has asked for 740,000 euros in damages from the "Last Generation" climate activists. The reason? The protests organized between 2022 and 2023 at various German airports caused the cancellation of around a hundred flights, leaving around 15,000 passengers stranded. Inconveniences that would have cost the airline hundreds of thousands of Euros.

"The blockades of airports with the aim of disrupting operations far exceed the limits of a legitimate protest. I am pleased that airlines are pursuing claims for compensation through civil law", was the comment of the German Minister of transport, Volker Wissing, explaining that such interruptions are no small crime.

The German newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" reconstructed what happened: in November 2022, 35 flights and 5,000 passengers were hit at Berlin-Brandenburg airport (120,000 euros in damage). Then on 13 July 2023 the protests at Hamburg airport affected 57 flights and 8500 passengers (400,000 Euros in damage); while at Düsseldorf airport 24 flights and 3000 passengers were affected (cost 220,000 Euros). In all three actions, members of the group were arrested. This did not stop the "Last Generation" protests.
