British Airways speaks Chinese

It will hire an additional 50 Mandarin-speaking crewmembers

British Airways will double the number of Mandarin-speaking cabin crew on routes to China. The airline's management announced this today. This is a move that falls within the framework of initiatives through which the company seeks to expand in the Land of the Dragon, the second largest market in the world.

"Being able to double the number of cabin crew on board has many advantages in terms of language, in terms of cultural awareness. The British flag carrier resumed direct passenger flights to Shanghai in April and to Beijing in June 2023, after that China has reopened borders closed by almost three years of Covid-19 restrictions", explained Calum Laming, the airline's Chief Customer Officer.

The company plans to hire an additional 50 crewmembers who speak Mandarin. Hostesses and stewards will be put into service by July 2024 on board flights to Beijing and Shanghai, thus increasing the total number of staff speaking in Chinese to 100.
