Red Sea: Houthi drones shot down

Greek military ship of European mission "Aspides" defends navigation

Two military drones shot down by Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Red Sea during the night. The counteroffensive was carried out by the Greek military frigate "Hydra", which is part of the European naval mission "Eunavfor Aspides", launched in February 2024 in response to the growing threat of attacks against Western commercial naval units transiting Middle Eastern waters. It is yet another raid against armed forces units.

It was reported by the Greek press agency "Athens-Macedonian News Agency" (Ana-Mpa), which cites an official from the Ministry of National Defense as its source. According to the latter, the military ship shot down the two drones to protect a merchant ship plying the waters of the Gulf of Aden. In the past few hours, two other drones, fired by the pro-Palestinian Houthi militiamen against the US military ship "USS Laboon", were shot down by a short-range ballistic missile, as reported by the United States Central Command (Centcom).

Recently, again as part of the "Aspides" initiative, the Italian destroyer "Caio Duilio" had shot down two armed unmanned aircraft that threatened the security of the operational area, as announced yesterday by the Italian Ministry of Defense, confirming the key role of Italy in ensuring maritime security and promoting stability in the region.
