Transports in chaos in Italy: general strike on Friday, June 20, flights at risk

Estimated disruptions affecting over 200,000 users due to delays and cancellations of flights, trains, and public transportation/ENAC ATTACHMENT

A day of significant disruptions is forecast for both Italian and international travellers. Tomorrow, on June 20, 2025, a national 24-hour general strike has been called, which will significantly impact the transportation sector, with particular focus on the air transport segment. The Ministry of Transport has announced the modalities of the strike, while the Cub Trasporti union has reiterated the reasons for the protest through its social media channels.

The strike, lasting from 00:01am to 11:59pm on June 20, will involve work stoppages across multiple categories, with particularly significant effects on air transportation. According to initial estimates, disruptions are expected to affect hundreds of thousands of passengers; some sources indicate that around 200,000 travellers are at risk of cancellations or delays.

Air transport in the spotlight: widespread delays and cancellations

The air transport sector will be the most affected, with the mobilization encompassing not only flight crew but also ground staff and air traffic controllers. Major airlines, both national and international, such as ITA Airways, Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air, could experience cancellations and significant delays.

The airports most impacted will be those with high passenger traffic, including Rome-Fiumicino, Milan-Malpensa, Naples-Capodichino, Bergamo-Orio al Serio, Bologna "Guglielmo Marconi", and Catania-Fontanarossa. In addition to cancellations, passengers should prepare for delays at security controls, queues at check-in counters, slower baggage handling, and overcrowding in waiting and boarding areas.

The Italian Civil Aviation Authority (Ente nazionale aviazione civile - Enac) has communicated that scheduled flights within protected time windows—from 07:00am to 10:00am and from 6:00pm, to 9:00pm—will be guaranteed. Within these intervals, flights should operate regularly. Connections to the islands, especially for health or emergency reasons, as well as flights related to national emergencies or military needs, will also be ensured. For all other flights, it is essential that passengers check the status of their journey through airlines' official websites or apps before heading to the airport. In the event of cancellations, airlines generally offer the option to reschedule the travel date free of charge or to request a full refund of the ticket.

Not just airplanes: trains and local public transport also affected

The general strike, primarily called by grassroots unions such as Cub, Sgb, and Usb, with additional support from SI Cobas for the railway sector and other unions for the air transport industry, will not be limited to aviation. The railway sector will also be affected, with potential delays and cancellations on Freccia, Intercity, and regional trains (with guaranteed morning and evening time windows, as well), as well as local public transport (buses, trams, and metro systems) in many Italian cities, with modalities varying according to local administrations. Disruptions will also extend to highway services and maritime and port transport.

The reasons for the strike, as reiterated by Cub Trasporti and other unions, focus on wage demands, the improvement of working conditions, and safeguarding workers' health and safety. The mobilization sends a strong signal ahead of what promises to be an intense summer tourist traffic season. Travelers are advised to plan their journeys in advance and to consult official channels of airlines and transport authorities for real-time updates.
