Russia: S-400s have replaced old systems in Arctic

Gala ceremony in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago

Today, on September 23, the new Russian anti-aircraft missile system S-400 has replaced the old S-300 missiles at the Russian archipelago of Novaya Zemlya. On the occasion of the "renewal" a gala ceremony was held on the Island of Yuzhny. The new line-up, located near the Rogachevo air base, about 8 kilometers from the settlement in Belushyaha Bay, aims to protect the Arctic airspace on the eastern Barents Sea: these waters are areas of important patrols carried out by missile submarines Russian ballistics.

In recent years, Russia has significantly expanded its military infrastructure in the Arctic as a region rich in mineral resources. In addition to the forces of Novaya Zemlya, the country has placed troops in the Land of Franz Josef and the Islands of New Siberia.
