Alitalia: meeting today between FS and Delta Air Lines
Negotiations continue, but the times will be longer
A delegation made up of executives and financial consultants of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) will be today in Atlanta to meet the leaders of Delta Air Lines, so as to speed up the negotiation that aims to sign a collaboration agreement for the relaunch of the airline Alitalia. A necessary and obligatory move by the non-binding offer presented by the Group led by Gianfranco Battisti, linked to the need to find an international partner in the field of air transport, identified either in Delta or Lufthansa.
With the German Group, however, the negotiations would not have started yet, also because on Lufthansa the government "veto" weighs on the possible excesses of staff and on the possible difficulties to operate on long-haul connections. A sort of feeder would put Alitalia in disadvantageous conditions and would be -presumably- reduced to the role of supporting the largest company in Frankfurt. Despite these doubts next week a meeting with the leaders of Lufthansa should be, at least to check and to evaluate the proposals also in terms of economic and re-launch for Alitalia. The other option, currently favored, is that at Delta Air Lines will be added the low-cost easyJet that would buy some medium-range aircraft and some slots at the Milan-Linate airport, allowing Alitalia to put ready funds in cash, to be reinvested in the modernization of the long-haul fleet.
What is certain is that until a solution is found and the agreements will not be defined, the presentation of the FS industrial plan for Alitalia will continue to move forward in time, so much so that now the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) expects it by end of February, instead of January 31st. An extension of the times that if on the one hand guarantees more room for maneuver for the negotiations, on the other it makes the economic situation of the airline more and more complicated and the future uncertain.
