Switzerland: increase in the cost of airline tickets to reduce greenhouse gases

Ready a series of reforms to respect the Paris Agreement

According to various Swiss media, the Swiss Commission for the Environment Council of the State proposed, today 19 August, the increase in the cost of air tickets, diesel, gasoline to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. A solution that seeks to respect what was stipulated in 2015 in Paris by the United Nations Climate Change Agreement.

The Swiss reform intends to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and the various points of the proposal include: a fee between 30 and 120 francs on air tickets, a tax of 10 cents per liter which will increase further up to 15 cents in 2025, the establishment of a climate fund deriving from the auctioning of emission rights and vehicle penalties, measures concerning buildings and monitoring by the Federal Supervisory Authority on financial markets (FINMA) of financial risks due to climate change.
