The wrong plan of Berlin-Brandenburg airport

It's now a symbol of bad investments

Berlin-Brandenburg airport has become the symbol of bad investments. Not only because it opened 10 years late, during which the cost rose to 7 billion Euros. Inaugurated in the first months of the pandemic, the airport quickly became a national embarrassment. So much so that the Liberal Democratic Party (Fdp), a member of the traffic light coalition that supports the newly appointed chancellor Olaf Scholz, included it in its government program as an example to be avoided under the heading "future investments and sustainable financing". 

Nevertheless, Germany is not backing down and is planning new transportation infrastructure with public-private partnerships. This, however, brings back the traditional topsy-turvy tension between a government that wants to minimize costs and companies eager to maximize revenues. This is not recognized in the coalition agreement. And here the Berlin airport comes back as a touchstone: the executive intends to use the money as capital (not debt), to help control the cost overruns that have bankrupted the Brandenburg airport's balance sheet. In short, even in covid times there are enough planes flying into this airport to remind the new chancellor what not to do.
