USA: huge inconvenience to airline travellers

Over 18,000 cancellations and delays in the last 10 days

The 2022 starts badly for the US air transport sector. At least 2700 flights to and from the USA were cancelled on Saturday January 1st, while more than 4000 connections were delayed. The situation was confirmed on Sunday with another 2700 flights cancelled and more than 10,000 delayed. Today are announced 1084 delays and 1895 cancellations. This is what emerges from the monitoring of the specialized website FlightAware. To cause all the bad weather conditions and the shortage of personnel caused by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. 

This brings the total number of cancelled flights to over 18,000 in the last 10 days, since Christmas Eve. This is the worst week-end of the season as far as leisure travel is concerned. The disruptions affected nearly every US carrier. On Saturday, Southwest Airlines cancelled or delayed one-third of all its scheduled trips, while regional SkyWest had to change its schedule by 44 percent. Delta Air Lines cut 10 percent of its flights while American and United cancelled 7 percent.
