Cargo Swissport exceeds pre-pandemic volumes
Passenger services sector still far from recovery
Multinational airport services company Swissport International, specialised in baggage handling, refuelling, on-board maintenance and cleaning, has reported that in 2021 the cargo sector handled 5.1 million tonnes of goods, surpassing its pre-pandemic performance. All thanks to demand in the logistics sector, which has driven up the volume of goods entrusted compared to 4.6 million in 2019.
However, recovery is still far off in the air passenger services sector, where pre-crisis levels have not been reached yet: 2 million flights managed. A figure that marks +20% compared to the previous year, but still at -50% on 2019.
Meanwhile, with the easing of air travel restrictions in many States and the slow recovery of the sector, the Zurich-based company has decided to launch a re-hiring plan and new staff recruitment: around 17,000 new jobs worldwide, compared to 19,000 redundancies made in the last two years. The Swiss company operates at 307 airports in 50 countries.
