Ukrainian conflict: Russia initiates truce

Evacuation of civilians starts, but explosions are heard in the south of the country

Russia has announced the beginning today of a ceasefire in several Ukrainian cities starting at 10:00 am (8:00 am in Italy). It is the result of the third round of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine that were held last night in Belarus. On the table of the meeting the two delegations found an agreement to allow the evacuation of civilians through humanitarian corridors in Kiev, Mariupol, Kharkiv and other urban centers.

The head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, said that the new round of peace talks "did not live up to the expectations" of Moscow, but the negotiations will continue. "I can say that we came with a large amount of written documents. We had specific agreements, drafts, proposals and we were hoping to sign today some of the points that seem to have been agreed in principle, that we would at least sign a protocol".

Meanwhile, the British broadcaster "Bbc" reported that in the south of Ukraine continue to hear loud explosions, as in the city of Odessa, on the Black Sea, one of the most important seaports in the Mediterranean Sea. Russia also continues to besiege the coastal city of Mariupol, as well as the capital Kiev and the eastern city of Kharkiv, while Moscow's army expands into the Kherson region.
