Ukrainian conflict: towards Chinese mediation

Today virtual meeting between political leaders of France, Germany and China

Today French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will have a meeting, probably by videoconference, with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. At the center of the meeting is once again the Ukrainian conflict for which a diplomatic way out is being sought. China is an important country to achieve this goal: for its friendship with Moscow and willingness to mediate.

Meanwhile, yesterday was held an on-line Euro-Atlantic summit of four to discuss developments in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The American President, his French counterpart, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the German chancellor will be present. The meeting did not produce a common line on the embargo on Russian oil and gas.

These are the positions: Germany opposes the European embargo on Russian hydrocarbons, still considered "essential for Europe". The proceeds of gas and oil sold in Europe cover about 40% of federal revenues in Moscow. Money that also allows the Kremlin to continue paying for the military campaign in Ukraine. Berlin needs a few months to reduce its dependence on Moscow's gas.

Meanwhile, at the end of the week will be held in Turkey a bilateral between the Ukrainian foreign ministers Dmytro Kuleba and his Russian counterpart Sergej Lavrov. It will be the highest-level talks since the beginning of the conflict.
