Europe: 500 million for joint procurement on weapons

Borrell: "Without joint spending, costs rise and fragmentation risk"

The European Commission today will give the green light to the creation of a continental task-force to integrate arms procurement among member countries. A joint defense investment program on which Brussels is putting 500 million euros.

"Today, without joint spending and a coordinated approach, increased spending risks bringing further fragmentation and undoing the progress made". The critical issues are precisely the "fragmentation of demand" and "national structuring of companies", while the various countries should focus on "rebuilding stockpiles, replacing Soviet-era systems, strengthening air and missile defense systems", explained Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

It is an initiative within the framework of the European Defense building project, which will also address the formation of continental consortia and defense capabilities of the 27 member countries. The goal is to centralize and coordinate procurement that results from the increase in military spending approved by the member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), through joint procurement, succeeding in obtaining better prices.
