UK celebrates the "HMS Prince of Wales" aircraft carrier

City of Bristol grants "Freedom of the City" on Saturday 10th June 2023

The British "HMS Prince of Wales" aircraft carrier, the largest warship of the Royal Navy, will obtain the "Freedom of the City" on Saturday 10 June 2023. It is an honor conferred by the administration of Bristol, where it headquarters a navy base, which grants "freedom of entry" into the city to hundreds of soldiers and women who will parade through the historic center, renewing the link between the armed force and the city.

"HMS Prince of Wales" was launched on 21 September 2017. She weighs 65,000 tonnes and has a crew of over 700. And with its flight deck measuring 280 meters long and 70 meters wide it can accommodate 36 warplanes and 4 AW-101 "Merlin" helicopters. It is a fifth generation aircraft carrier and one of the most powerful warships ever built in the UK.

Almost 300 sailors and Royal Marines will parade through central Bristol to mark the award. The city "has a long and proud history of affiliation with our nation's armed forces, a tradition which has seen eight previous units awarded the Freedom of the City", said Royal Navy honorary captain Lt Peaches Golding.
