Russia: "Kuznetsov" aircraft carrier soon in service

The vessel is expected to return to sea in Spring 2024

The Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" could be back in service by the end of 2024. The ship, launched in 1985, is currently undergoing refitting operations which should have made its operational in 2023. However, due to a series of delays accumulated in repairs, the return to sea was postponed.

"According to the revised re-entry plan, factory trials and sea trials of the aircraft carrier are expected to begin in the Spring of 2024". "If the tests pass without problems, the vessel can be handed over to the fleet at the end of 2024. If something goes wrong during the tests, the transition to 2025 is inevitable", the Russian State news agency "Tass" reported, citing an unnamed defense source.

The Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" is undergoing repairs after a fire broke out on board the ship in December 2019. The accident killed a soldier and injured 12 other people. In 2022, a major structural repair work was completed on the pier, which housed a crane that crashed into the bridge in the collapse of 2019, destroying it.
