Gibraltar airport: management agreement sought

At the center of the negotiations are Spain, the UK and the EU

The use of Gibraltar's civil and military airport and customs control in the exclave of the United Kingdom are two of the most complex issues on the negotiating table between Spain and Great Britain. This is being discussed today in a meeting in Brussels attended by the foreign ministers of Madrid and London, José Manuel Albares and David Cameron respectively, together with the European head of the "Brexit" negotiations, Maros Sfcovic.

The aim is to find a political agreement on the status of Gibraltar in relations with the European Union, eight years after the "Brexit" referendum which led to the effective exit of the United Kingdom four years ago. The common interest of Spain, Great Britain and Brussels is to reach an agreement before the European elections scheduled for 9 June 2024, so as not to delay the negotiations for several months.

The Prime Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, will also be present at the meeting as part of the British delegation. On the eve of the summit, interviewed by the media, the Spanish minister Albares declared that "an agreement is very close", even if the parties do not expect a definitive agreement to be reached at this meeting.
