The discovery of the wreckage - VIDEO
NBA basketball champion Kobe Bryant died yesterday during a helicopter crash in California. The Sikorsky S-76B, registration N72EX, hit a hilly terrain in Calabasas in Los Angeles County, killing all nine people on board. Considered one of the best players in basketball history, Bryant scored over 30,000 career points and was part of the Lakers team, winning five leagues and 18 titles before retiring in 2016. He was also twice Olympic gold, helping the US team of NBA stars to obtain the title in 2008 in Beijing and in 2012 in London. In 2018 he also won an Oscar for the short-film "Dear Basketball".
The S-76 Spirit is a four-bladed light twin-turbine utility helicopter, designed and built by the US aviation company Sikorsky. The aircraft complied from the beginning with the rules for all-weather flight as one of the main uses was the "off-shore" one for oil companies. The thrusters are housed above the fuselage behind the drive shaft.
