Cybersecurity: the US focus on the water system

American Water Works Association evaluates the draft and requirements

The US Government is preparing to strengthen the cybersecurity of the water supply system in the United States. The goal is to convince thousands of supply network key companies to upgrade their cyber attack detection technology. In fact, says the executive, the system has multiple vulnerabilities, already known to the most experienced hacker groups.

The control systems of water supply, in fact, are increasingly digitized. Therefore, Washington asks water companies to analyze and communicate data, reporting any bugs, to help federal authorities to monitor threats to different types of critical infrastructure. Currently, American Water Works Association officials are evaluating the draft of the federal plan and technology requirements.

The White House initiative follows the Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity Initiative, which was launched in April with the goal of strengthening the security of US electric utilities. The program had been expanded in August to include natural gas pipelines and eventually extended to the water sector.
