Dengue alarm: checks in ports and airports

Prevent epidemic with advent of hot season

There is a Dengue alarm in Italy. Security checks on board planes and ships carrying passengers and goods could soon begin in ports and airports. If necessary, disinfestations will also be carried out on board aircraft and vessels. The goal is to prevent an epidemic of the tropical disease with the advent of the hot season, from May to November.

"It is possible that means of transport give a lift to infected mosquitoes. Our temperatures at the moment would not allow them to survive", but the matter will change with spring when "we will have heat and humidity: the South American epidemic could also have repercussions from us", explained Fabrizio Montarsi, entomologist of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie (Izsve).

In 2023, 347 dengue infections were recorded in Italy, although the majority of them were people arriving abroad who showed symptoms in Italy. In 82 cases, however, it was local tiger mosquitoes that spread the virus, in particular due to insects present in the two outbreaks in Lodi and Rome. In short, the epidemic in Italy due to an infected passenger is now a concrete possibility; therefore it is necessary to prevent.
