Trieste Airport redesigns traffic flow: terminal access revolutionized from October 22

Roadworks in progress on SS14 in Ronchi dei Legionari

A single entrance will separate vehicular and cycling flows, integrating the airport with the major regional routes

Major news for the accessibility of Trieste Airport (Aeroporto del Friuli Venezia Giulia) in Ronchi dei Legionari. Starting Wednesday, 22 October, a significant change to the road layout in front of the terminal will come into effect — a structural intervention aimed at optimizing traffic flows and fully integrating the airport into the regional sustainable mobility system. Ongoing works on State Road 14 (SS14), managed by FVG Strade, will open the artery to a new single access for all vehicles bound for the airport. This change will eliminate the current internal roundabout, replacing it with new dedicated lanes to ensure a clear separation between motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.

What Changes from 22 October:

- Single Entrance: all motorists, whether heading to the short-stay areas in front of the terminal or using the medium/long-term parking (P1 and P2), will have to use the new dedicated entrance on the SS14. The new entrance will be located approximately 200 metres from the roundabout that connects the SS14 to the SS677 (direction Ronchi dei Legionari airport motorway interchange) and the SR14–SP19 link.

- Integrated Cycling Route: at the same time the FVG2/d cycle route (Monfalcone–Trieste Airport–Aquileia) will be implemented. This route connects Ronchi dei Legionari airport to the eponymous municipality and, more broadly, to the main regional cycleways (FVG2 Adriatic Sea and FVG1 Alpe Adria). The project, strategic for soft mobility, will allow cyclists to reach the intermodal hub safely, facilitating interchange with train and air services.

The intervention is part of a broader strategy to redevelop the external areas of the airport, which in the coming months will also see the modernization of parking areas and, in a later phase, the complete renewal of the terminal exit onto the SS14.

Trieste Airport has asked passengers and visitors to pay close attention to the new signage from October 22, apologizing for any temporary inconvenience that may occur during the adjustment phase.
